WHO IS IT ?
Charles Carrère is a master stained-glass artist, mosaicist and multi-faceted artist. He was born on 10 May 1927 in Bellite on the family farm in Anglet, a French town in the Pyrénées Atlantiques region of Aquitaine. In this department the cultural identity is within the Community of the North Basque Country called Ipparalde and its province is Labourd.
Charles Carrère had two masters: for drawing Louis Frédéric Dupuis at the Bayonne drawing school and for the art of stained glass and mosaics Jean Lesquibe, Master Glassmaker and Mosaicist in Anglet.
In 1977, after 30 years of work under the guidance of Jean Lesquibe, Charles Carrère set up his own business in Bellite on his native Angloy farm. Orders were not long in coming. This is how the student who became a Master created numerous stained glass windows and mosaics for private homes, public places and also churches in the Basque Country, in the Landes, on the Reunion island and in Mali. But once his work day is over, Charles Carrère goes upstairs to his artist’s studio. There, freed from the very restrictive standards of his profession, he can express himself without limits. He will produce many works, paintings, collages but also drawings called caprices. The caprice revealed him as a surrealist to the general public at the end of 2021 until April 2022 during an exhibition “Les Caprices de Charles” at the Basque Museum and History of Bayonne.
WHY THIS WEBSITE ?
This website exists to perpetuate the work of Charles Carrère. It marks the creation of a “catalogue raisonné” in collaboration with the Association Charles Carrère. This catalogue will serve as a repository for the Artist’s stained glass, glass tiles, mosaics and other works. It will also provide quality documentation as the artist has testified during his lifetime and on video about what motivated each creation.
WEBSITE EVOLUTION
The focuses regularly offer articles with an analysis of a work. These focuses may concern stained glass windows, mosaics or drawings, paintings and collages of the artist. The Association will from time to time invite someone to comment on the focus article. These people are chosen on the basis of their credentials in Art History or in Stained Glass or Mosaic Technique or any other recognised competence in the field of Art. Sometimes, when the subject lends itself to it, it may be a member of Charles Carrère’s family.
